Archives: Jamie Lynn Spears ‘How Could I Want More’ – Single Review
This article was first published on December 13th, 2013 on forthecountryrecord.com.
I think Jamie Lynn Spears surprised us all when she announced that she was forging a career in country. Even more so when straight after that announcement she released her first single to iTunes, without a record label, after years of quietly honing her craft. The final blow of surprise came when that song was actually… well… country. And good.
Kept acoustic in its sensibility, ‘How Could I Want More’ is atmospheric in its gentle nature providing the setting for the narrative, peaceful summer days with a perfect guy. Except, what could have been a lyrical effort full of trivial fluff, Disney sweetness at its prime, quickly becomes something quintessentially country in its make-up. From the surface happiness of what is actually happening, to the real inner turmoil, yearning, conflict, regret, ‘How Could I Want More’ does a very good job of immediately showing us the depth in Jamie Lynn Spears’ songwriting. While musically it could illustrate a simple, sweet love story, the lyrics are what turn it on its head and provide a secret emotional insight, something which much of today’s country radio is lacking.
As the song develops, pedal steel and dobro make their appearance (notably with a gorgeous dobro solo), showing a loyalty to older sounds and a traditional leaning that is indeed promising for her future country artistry. In addition, the drums add another level of interest by not conforming to a standard beat, but instead providing a far more dynamic rhythm which does more than keep the song on track.
Yes, everybody in the country music community is talking about Jamie Lynn Spears. In her departure from the kind of music her sister makes, to the authenticity this song emanates that has blown everyone away. While many people come to country music to exploit the market as a novelty “let’s try it”, Jamie gives off the impression that she is serious, and that this is heartfelt, and that is probably the most important thing at this point. She is certainly going to be one of the most exciting things to come in 2014, and I’m sure with her extensive fanbase outside of country we’ll start getting females into the top 20 again. I can’t wait.
